Dear Kenmore Families,
On 26 July this year, our school will celebrate our 125th birthday! We’re really looking forward to celebrating this special milestone with old-fashioned games and activities on the school oval, a display of historical photos and artefacts, and finishing the day with an outdoor movie.
In the lead-up to the big day, we’ve been hearing from past students and staff about what’s changed—and what’s stayed the same—since their time at Kenmore. If you or a member of your family attended Kenmore State School please get in touch - we’d love to share some of your stories or photos via the newsletter or assembly as we get ready to celebrate 125 years of education at Kenmore State School.
Guidance Officer Week – Celebrating one of our Gems
During Guidance Officer Week, held from 28 April to 9 May, we acknowledge the valuable role Desley plays in supporting the wellbeing and learning of our students.
Desley plays a key role in supporting the wellbeing and learning of our students, working closely with families and staff to ensure every child feels supported and understood. Her steady presence, professional insight, and genuine care have helped shape the positive and inclusive culture we’re proud of at our school.
Desley’s long-standing contribution to education and student wellbeing, which was recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), continues to make a meaningful difference every day.
To learn more about the work of Guidance Officers, visit the Department of Education website.
Carparking and Community
Brisbane City Council is running a Safer Schools Program in Term 2 to promote safe parking practices and ensure compliance with local traffic regulations around schools. The Moggill Road and Princeton Street carparks, which are used by many of our school families, are Council-managed carparks. Council officers will be conducting regular patrols in these areas to monitor parking compliance. The Council has asked us to share this information with our school community.
School Zone Parking
Parking in accordance with all road rules and signage is important to keep our children and other road users safe. Unfortunately, Brisbane City Council has received an increase in the number of reports of illegal parking around our school. As a result, our school has been added to Council’s Safer Schools Program this term.
What does this mean?
Brisbane City Council’s Parking Compliance Officers will be actively patrolling the streets surrounding our school over the coming term to encourage safer parking behaviours. These patrols will be conducted on foot and in highly visible Community Safety and Regulation vehicles that can identify alleged offences using Automatic Number Plate Recognition and GPS software. Please be kind – they have a job to do.
What are the common parking signs around schools?
A guide to common parking signs around school zones can be found on Council’s website by searching the term ‘School Parking’.
We kindly request that parents, guardians, and visitors to adhere to all parking regulations in the vicinity of the school.
Prep Enrolments 2026
On Tuesday evening, we welcomed a number of prospective families to our school in readiness for the 2026 Prep year. We also have lots of siblings starting Prep next year and we can’t wait to welcome current and new families to our school. Please submit your enrolment application to the office as soon as possible so that we can commence planning for 2026: https://kenmoress.eq.edu.au/enrolments
A Week of Connection and Community
This week has been full of small but meaningful moments that reflect the strength of our school community. From the fun and creativity at the Prep Mother’s Day activity morning with Chappy, to the excitement and cheering at the P–2 Cross Country with Mr Blaik, and the conversations shared at the International Student Breakfast—it’s been lovely to see so many families, students, and staff connecting in different ways.
One of the highlights for me was reading one of my favourite stories to the Preps and their mums and grandmothers. Thanks to Chappy for the thoughtful activities provided for our Preps this week.
To all the mothers, grandmothers, and carers in our community—we hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable Sunday.

Kind regards,
Ingrid
International Student Program
This morning we celebrated the wonderful work with students and their families at our International Student breakfast. Our students were very proud to show how much they have learnt so far this year. Our literacy focus across the school in term 1 was narrative writing, and students this morning had the opportunity to share their creativity and imaginations as they shared the narrative stories they have written. Thank you to all families that attended and for the delicious food that we were able to share together
Kenmore State School is extremely proud of its highly regarded International Student Program (ISP) with 30 students now part of our community. Our families have travelled from many countries to be part of the program, including, China, Korea, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, and Vietnam. Our international students are an important part of our wonderful school and contribute to our vibrant and multicultural community. Our teachers and staff are amazed at the outstanding growth we witness in their work, as well as the joy from watching new friendships grow.
Thank you to all our international families for choosing Kenmore.

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is an annual statewide initiative for Queensland state and non-state schools and home-educated students from Prep to Year 9, as well as children (aged up to 5 years) enrolled in an early childhood centre. The PRC aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning.
We are delighted to invite all students to participate in the challenge which commences on 6th May and runs until 22nd August.
All families should have received a Premier’s Reading Challenge reading log by email. Students will also receive a paper copy from their teacher. Once completed, these reading logs should be returned to the class teacher or Mrs Caskie in the library. They can also be emailed to Mrs Caskie in the library at gcask1@eq.edu.au
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, between 6th May to 22nd August.
To complete the challenge:
- Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
- Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
- Years 5 to 6 must read at least 15 books.
The following activities can be counted towards the challenge:
- reading independently
- shared reading
- being read to (Prep – Year 2 for books written in English; and all year levels for additional languages).
The following literature forms can be counted towards the challenge:
- printed books
- e-books, virtual books and digital publications
- graphic novels and comic books
- audio and braille books
- newspapers, magazines and recipe books
- books in additional languages (other than English).
The aim for the 2025 challenge is to engage more students to read than ever before!
No need for students to register individually as they will be included in our school registration.
At the end of the challenge, all participants who have handed in a completed reading log will receive a certificate from the Premier.
Happy reading!
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 25th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
2025 was the biggest and most successful NSS to date with over 2.3 million participants at over 21, 000 locations!
This year’s book is The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel and Danny Snell. What do you get when you mix a giant truck and a curious cat? A purr-fect adventure!
Mrs H will be sharing this book and activities with students in their library time.
See you @ the library

It’s such a special time of year for me as a Prep Mum and Chappy. This morning, I had the privilege of hosting a Mother’s Day Event for Prep Mums and/or Maternal figures. It was very special seeing people engage with each other. I thought it was hilarious watching Mums receive a hand massage and dress up for a funny photo. I know my hand massage was so nice, but my hands had quite a lot of cream on them afterwards! I hope those who came enjoyed the connection time. I spent quite a while preparing the Jenga with a twist. I wrote little questions on a few pieces for each tower. It reminded me that connection is simple. I think we sometimes overcomplicate connection. Sometimes all we need to do is add something to what we already do. Do you have a question you ask your kids at dinnertime? Do you have a nighttime routine that includes moments of engagement and fun? Do you think about fun moments and share them with each other? Do you jump on the trampoline together or take the dogs for a walk? These little moments are so special. I sometimes undervalue my little moments with my kids. But those moments matter. They are special and valued. Weaved together these moments create a wonderful foundation for our little people to grow into loved and grounded adults.
In upcoming News stay tuned for the release of our Fun Sock Day. This is an upcoming fundraiser for my Chaplaincy service. The funds raised will be used to supplement the funding we receive to ensure I can continue to support the school. Your donation is appreciated! Stay tuned for more details. Crazy/Fun Sock Day Wednesday 4th of June.
Have a great weekend,
Chappy
